Community Empowerment through Creativity: Connection, Self-care, Playtime
✅ "FANTASTIC! When can I do it again?!"
✅ "I didn't expect this at all! I loved it!"
✅ "Wow wow wow! This is not like any other workshop I've ever attended, it exceeded all my expectations!"
This is what the participants at the first Upcycling Workshop for community empowerment at Emmaus Eindhoven said after spending a Friday evening in July immersed in creative activities in the legendary second-hand shopping center and emerging local upcycling hotspot.
The event was a part of the organization's ongoing initiative to become a community empowerment hub and offer opportunities to people from different ages and walks of life to establish meaningful connections, learn new skills, get creative, and cultivate environmentally friendly consumer practices.
What Happened at the Emmaus Textile Upcycling Workshop?

Participants from 8 countries explored the world of upcycling and learned basic, and advanced skills for giving new life to old materials from a team of international instructors.
The devoted Emmaus volunteer and textile wizard Janine from Textiellab-040 and myself in the role of creative guide and catalyst enabled the workshop visitors to turn discarded textiles into unique wearable artworks, practical household items, and multi-purpose styling accessories.
What Did the Experience Include?
✅ Private tour at the oldest second-hand shop in Eindhoven
✅ International dinner prepared by an awarded food influencer

Empowerment through Creative Play
The format of the workshop allowed the participants to engage in open-ended creative playtime camouflaged as an empowering learning experience. All attendees received support and guidance throughout the entire process, but had the freedom to choose their own upcycling adventure, follow their curiosity, explore tools and techniques, and cultivate new skills with no fear of failure or fixed expectations.
